Hi! My name is Amy Brown and I am the Lead teacher of the school age classroom here at MCA. I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. I have completed many courses towards my art education degree and I am First Aid/CPR certified. I have been working with children since 2002. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with children of all ages at MCA since 2004.
My name is Karen D. Flynt. I am the Lead JK Teacher here at MCA. I have been teaching for over 30 years. I taught for 13 years in Los Angeles, CA, while I was obtaining my degree. I have an associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education, as well as my Child Development Associate. I also furthered my studies and have completed many credits toward my BA in Liberal Studies and Sociology. I taught primarily Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten in Los Angeles. I also substituted as an English Second Language, Special Needs and After-School teacher. I have been teaching Junior Kindergarten in Richmond for the last 15 year years. I’ve been with Midlothian Children’s Academy since we opened in May 2004. I also helped design and plan the curriculum.
Our JK program at MCA is a busy, fun-filled and educational experience. Our main goal is to get your child prepared socially, as well as academically, for Kindergarten. We use Hooked on Phonics as our language curriculum. Written Academics are done every Tuesday and Thursday. Our math curriculum is Math Their Way, which is a program that uses hands-on math manipulatives. In addition to these programs, we also do weekly Science Activities and Cooking each month. Spanish and Sign Language are taught each Monday. Children leaving the MCA JK program are usually writing their first and last names, counting to 100, adding and subtracting to 20, and reading many sight words.
We go on one, occasionally two, field trips each month during the school year. They are educational and related to our weekly themes. A copy of the lesson plan goes out every Monday and any special activities are listed. Progress Reports are given out in December and May. Conferences are scheduled at that time, if requested. The JK program here at MCA is a wonderful start to your child’s academic career.
